Essays

Describe your academic, professional, and personal background, and how your experiences will make you an effective teacher in Chile. *

Describe your motivation for becoming a volunteer English teacher in Chile. *

As an English language teaching assistant, you will work with Chilean students of varying, and often very basic, English levels. As a native or near-native English speaker, you will be focusing on improving students’ listening and speaking abilities. With this in mind, what are some ways in which you could motivate students and foster English language learning in your school community? Please discuss classroom activities, extra-curricular activities, materials that you would like to bring from home to use in your classroom, and other ideas to encourage English language learning inside and outside of the classroom. *

Placement Preferences

Please keep in mind that it is more difficult to place volunteers who are vegetarians, have allergies to pets, and other such issues than volunteers who have few restrictions. Also note that the EODP cannot guarantee placements in a particular region and/or city. While your preferences are used to make placements, the EODP cannot guarantee that your preferences will be fulfilled. We ask volunteers to be flexible, and to understand that we assign volunteers according to available schools and families. In the questions below, please indicate your geographic and demographic preferences, marking the order of priority of of your preferences. (The "first choice" is what you want most, and the "sixth choice" is what you want least.) Do NOT repeat answers (i.e. do not put "north" as your preference for each choice).

For example: A volunteer who lists his preferences as "Urban, Central, North, South, Midsized, Rural" is indicating that if possible, he would prefer to be in a city, no matter the region. This volunteer should also be open to living in a rural setting, if necessary.

Similarly, a volunteer who lists her preferences as "North, Urban, Midsized, Rural, Central, South" is indicating that if possible, she would prefer to be in the north, no matter the size of the placement city. This volunteer should also be open to living in the south of Chile, if necessary.

A volunteer who lists his preferences as "South, Rural, Central, Midsized, Urban, North" is indicating that if possible, he would prefer to be in a rural-to-midsized placement, in either the south or central parts of Chile. This volunteer should also be open to living in an urban center in the north, if necessary.

Living Arrangements

Host families come in many different forms and may consist of an older couple whose children have left home, a younger couple with children, a single parent with children, a single person, etc. Although it is recommended to live with a host family, volunteers may choose to live independently and receive the living allowance allocated to host families ($165.000 CLP per month during the 2016 year) in addition to the volunteer allowance.

Please be aware that if you choose to live independently (in an apartment or pension, etc.) and receive the living allowance designated for the host family, you will be responsible for assuming any expenses not covered by the living allowance. It is important to note that volunteers in the past who chose to live independently have reported that using their own funds to offset the costs of their accommodations was unavoidable. Having additional savings is a necessity, especially in covering any initial deposits and the first few months of rent. Please note that the EODP will only be able to provide limited assistance in finding housing. Additionally, volunteers living independently will not receive advance notice regarding their placement.

Please select your preferred living arrangement *
I will live with a host family.I will live independently.

Are you applying with another person? *
Please be aware that volunteers applying to be placed near to each other can only be guaranteed to be placed within the same region (not necessarily the same city), unless they choose to live independently.
YesNo

If you answered "yes" to the previous question, what is this person's full name?
Please be aware that this person will also need to mention your name on their application in order for us to consider the pairing. Additionally, you will both need to mark the same placement preferences (geographic and population density) in the section above.

Host Family Placement Preferences

Please fill out the following information whether or not you will be living with a host family. Be honest and thorough in identifying items that are important to you, remembering that these preferences may restrict your demographic and geographic placement preferences.

*Please note: If you indicated that you would prefer to live "independently" in the question above, we ask that you please fill out the host family information anyway in the event that your housing preferences/needs change.

*Also, please be aware that the information provided in this section will not be used to evaluate your application in any way. It is simply a request for information that will allow us to place you with a more appropriate family whose lifestyle and preferences will coincide well with yours, should you be accepted into the Program.

*The EODP will not inform host families about the selections you mark in this section. Your selections will, however, be used by the EODP to ensure that the family you are placed with is compatible with your needs.
