As we say “farewell” to 2019, we reflect on another successful year with the National Volunteer Center.
highlights about our volunteers and the impact they had on public schools in
147 people from 24 countries volunteered with the English Opens Doors Program (Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, China, Croatia, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, India, Ireland, Mexico, Nigeria, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Vietnam).
Volunteers taught over 28,000 students!
119 public schools throughout Chile received a volunteer. The costs (training, transport, stipends etc.) were shared between the English Opens Doors Program and local school administrations.
We asked volunteers
about their experiences while serving in the program in 2019:
98% of volunteers felt that the one-week intensive Orientation at the start of their service prepared them adequately to be an effective volunteer in the program. *
96% said that being a volunteer with the English Opens Doors Program was a positive experience. *
Volunteers were supported throughout their service by their Regional Representative and the National Volunteer Center (in-person teaching observation, phone and email check-ins, volunteer newsletter).
94% of volunteers lived with a host family, and 6% lived independently.

Like many other
organizations are doing as the decade comes to a close, we wanted to take a
moment to look back on the 2010s of the Volunteer Initiative. Since 2010, more
than 1,800 people from 63 different countries have volunteered with the English
Opens Doors Program, impacting approximately 40,000 students per year. All 16
regions of Chile have received volunteers, including Chile’s newest region,
Ñuble (19 volunteers in 2019). The region that received the most volunteers
over the past decade is Araucanía – with a total of 249!
To our former volunteers: thank you! To our future volunteers: we can’t wait to meet you!
